1800–? (died between 1871 and 1881)

Third Generation: Robert Warner < Martha Warner < William Warner

My 1st cousin 5 times removed

Robert Warner was the son of Martha Warner and an unknown father. He was born on January 29, 1800 and baptized in Howden, Yorkshire on February 20, 1800.1 2

In 1806, when Robert was six, his mother married Miles Norton, who may (or may not) have been Robert’s father.

It appears that Robert was sometimes known as Robert Warner, but later in life he was known as Robert Norton. 3 4

He married a woman named Elizabeth and had at least two children:

  1. William Norton
  2. Lewis Warner Norton

We don’t know Robert’s date of death, but he appears in the 1871 census and does not seem to appear in the 1881 census. Presumably he died, probably in Yorkshire, sometime during that decade.

Notes

The baptismal record (1830) of Robert’s son Lewis lists him as “Lewis Warner,” and lists his parents’ “Christian names” as “Robert Warner and Elizabeth” and their “surname” as “Norton alias Warner.”5

The baptismal record of his older son William had listed him as “William, son of Robert and Elizabeth Warner,” with no mention of “Norton.”

At the time of the 1851 census, Robert and Elizabeth were living in Sutton upon Derwent, Yorkshire, with their 25-year-old son William. Their 21-year-old son Lewis lived next door with his wife, Mary.7 Robert was a gamekeeper; William was a blacksmith; Lewis was a fisherman. By this time, it seems that everyone in the family was known by “Norton” rather than “Warner.”

By 1861, Robert and Elizabeth were living alone in Dunnington, Yorkshire. He continued to be a gamekeeper.

By 1871, they were living in the Walmgate municipal ward of the city of York. No longer a gamekeeper, Robert was listed in the census as a labourer. He was 71, but his census entry that year said he was 67.

I don’t have any information about Robert and Elizabeth after that.
