Gary Lee Coleman was the son of Vernon Dwight Coleman (1919–2002) and his wife Velma M. Davidson (1914–2002) He was born in Waterloo, Iowa on August 28, 1946.
Gary married Peggy Jo Henriksen in Cedar Falls, Iowa on July 22, 1972. They had one child, a daughter, and were later divorced, in El Paso, Texas, in 1979. He married Catherine Ann Crudder in Colorado Springs, Colorado on January 5, 1980.
He died in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 14, 1995, at the age of 48, and was buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
